Embracing Hope: Celebrating Parkinson's Awareness Month Through Dad's Journey
In the quiet strength of my father, Daniel Colangelo, Parkinson’s found an adversary unlike any other. Throughout his courageous decade-long battle, he remained the epitome of grace, embodying the cherished roles of husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. Now, over two years since his passing, I find myself reflecting on his journey amid the backdrop of Parkinson’s Awareness Month. My Dad’s unwavering spirit illuminated the path for countless others grappling with this relentless disease and his legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity.
Ironically, he passed away on April 11, 2022, World Parkinson’s Day, at the age of 80.
Parkinson's Affects Millions
There are an estimated 1 million people in the U.S. living with Parkinson’s disease and more than 10 million people worldwide. While predominantly affecting those beyond the age of 50, Parkinson’s respects no boundaries, touching the lives of younger individuals as well.
While there’s no cure for Parkinson’s there are medications and surgical treatments that can help improve symptoms. PD treatment plans usually include complementary and supportive therapies as well, which can include exercise, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
Discovering Support Programs
In New Canaan and Greenwich, CT a program led by Lynn Hagerbrant also provides terrific support and a range of services for Parkinson’s patients. The program, Parkinson’s Body and Mind, previously Shakers’ Anonymous, includes evening meetings for all ages that feature doctors and researchers on promising new treatments. Patients and caregivers share their struggles, and other services including exercise programs to improve the symptoms to fight progression, peer-led support groups and wellness programs grounded in positive psychology.
My father’s journey led him to discover the transformative benefits of the Rock Steady Boxing program, highlighting the importance of alternative activities in managing Parkinson’s symptoms. Therapeutic approaches like LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG address speech disorders and motor function deficits, providing invaluable tools in the management of Parkinson’s symptoms.
Support from Foundations & Family
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research also plays a critical role, providing support, resources, and advancing research to understand the disease better. A program we found extremely helpful offered by The Michael J. Fox Foundation is Parkinson’s IQ + You, providing educational events nationwide.
Our family rallied together to manage my father’s medical needs, forming an unyielding support system as we navigated the challenges of Parkinson’s. We found exceptional care in Dr. Pietro Mazzoni, during the early stages of his disease at Columbia/NY Presbyterian Hospital.
Throughout the journey, my mom, Patricia, remained a steadfast presence by my father’s side, supported by his family. Dr. Mazzoni summed it up best and his words resonate deeply, “To my dear patient Dan and his lovely family, the best medicine to fight Parkinson’s is the strength you can get from those around you who love you. You’re a lucky man.”
Amid the trials, we gleaned invaluable lessons and found solace in support programs. With gratitude for the recent strides, including the discovery of a Parkinson’s biomarker, we stand alongside organizations like The Michael J. Fox Foundation, resolute in our pursuit of a world free from Parkinson’s.
